Utah in a weekend: (Part 2) Bryce Canyon

after spending the morning with the artist's work, now protected by dia center for the arts, i made my way back along the bumpy, muddy road , four wheeling (while also stopping to pick wild lavender). i got back to I-15 and headed south to bryce canyon and stopping at an ikea (denver doesn't have one), picked up some badly needed furniture for my studio apt. the trip to bryce took about 4 hours from spiral jetty and was at a good pace.

Utah in a weekend: (Part 1) Spiral Jetty

left work early from denver on 10/12/07 and hopped on I-80 west. arrived in utah around 6:30 but still had 140 miles until rozell point. once nearby, at 10:20, camped out in golden spike n.p., and made way to spiral jetty (in a.m.) - w/ car that just barely cleared rocks along 16 mile track out to robert smithson's famous land art piece. before i ventured out, chatted briefly with a golden spike park ranger educating him a little about the artist and the context of his work. kept my travel budget low: knowing fuel would be most of expense, lived on raman noodles and cliff bars, red bulls, and goldfish crackers. once at spiral jetty, was surprised to know i was the only one there. all the better for me. you really never have a better experience, to become intimately affected by such a massive artwork, than to acknowledge it within the setting he chose. pictures are merely documents from someone else's vision and experience. i was astounded at the scale of the environment in relation to spiral jetty. i would strongly recommend a visit to anyone who appreciates his work. it was something almost out of a salvadore dali painting.
